"Corrupt Settings Detected" on New Install

https://www.logviewplus.com/forum/Topic1541.aspx

By DanP - 29 Sep 2022

I installed logviewplus_setup_2.6.5.exe, and when I ran LogViewPlus from the Start Menu, I got this error:

After clicking "Yes", I got this:

I did click "Send Report".

I tried installing as Administrator and as a normal user, and the behavior is the same in both cases.

The problem is repeatable, so let me know if you need more info.

Where is LogViewPlus looking for the settings?

Thanks for reporting this issue Dan.  I will take a look at the error report you sent as this should contain the information I need to resolve the problem in a future release.

For now, you should be able to restore LogViewPlus by deleting the file:
%AppData%\LogViewPlus\settings.dat

I would recommend backing up this file, or just rename it to something else.  The fix for this issue may allow these settings to be restored at a future date.

Hope that helps,

Toby

I took a quick look at the error report.  The error is caused by the fact that the "corrupt settings" message box is displayed.  This is something we will be able to fix for the next release.

However, it does not address the underlying issue of why your settings are corrupt.  Are you able to send me your settings file for analysis?  This can be done on the forum or you can contact us via email.

Thanks,

Toby

Thanks, it runs now. However, my trial license has expired now. This was the first time I have ever run LogViewPlus.

I made a copy of settings.dat if you want it.

I will send you the file via the contact page.

Thanks Dan.

If you could send me your settings.dat file, that would be a big help.  Please contact us via email.

If you are a registered user, you will need to re-register LogViewPlus.  If you are evaluating LogViewPlus, I will send you a free license.  I appreciate your help with this issue.

Thanks,

Toby

Okay, sent.

Some of the dates on the files look funny:

Maybe I did install LogViewPlus a long time ago, and I just forgot. That would explain the corrupt settings: Maybe they are just in a really old format. And it would explain why my trial license has expired.

I think that is the issue.

The dates appear to indicate that LogViewPlus was installed a long time ago.  We did have code in place to help users migrate to more recent versions, but this code was recently removed.  Hence - the corrupt settings.

I have your settings file and will double check to confirm.  I will reply via email.

Thanks again for your help with this one Dan!

Thanks for the free license, Toby. That was very kind of you.
