Auto tagging known issues, can this be done with rules?

My scenario is that I'm analyzing the same set of log files from many different machines. As I discover known issues, id like to create a library of known problems that will auto highlight or annotate or show in a report after logs are imported and parsed. I think I can get partway there with rules but I feel like that's not part of the intended purpose. Hopefully this makes sense, I'm happy to elaborate further.

Hi Zero,

Have you tried using filter templates?  Templates allow you to save a group of filters and re-apply them later - which sounds like the functionality you are looking for.  You can also apply templates automatically.

Hope that helps,

Toby

I'll play with that a little bit today. What I was hoping to do is import a set of logs files from a new customer, and have it identify root causes for issues I've found in the past. It sounds like you're suggesting I create filters for each known issues and if I go to those filters and they're populated with messages, then I've identified a "known issue". If there are no messages can you prevent the filter from appearing?

As an aside, I think this application is amazing. I'm not sure if you're the sole developer or if you have a team but I have a real passion for log analysis and this is one of the best tools I have ever used. I hope you don't lose your passion for continuing to update and improve it because there's nothing else out there quite like it and it fills a really great space between manual log analysis and an enterprise type stack like ELK that's confusing and cumbersome to set up. That, combined with how AI can help inexperienced people build dashboards and regex filters has just really unlocked a lot of the possibilities with LogViewPlus, so thanks for everything you do!

Correct.

No - but that's a great idea.  The problem is that the filters 'may' display information later.  If the file is in tail mode for example.  We could maybe add a new command to 'clear empty filters'.  That's something to think about.

Thanks for the feedback - glad to hear you are finding LogViewPlus helpful.  Smile

Yes - LogViewPlus is a passion project and your analysis of the market is exactly how I see things as well.  We have some plans to integrate AI in a way that does not share log data, so I think there is still plenty of room for improvement.
