Feature Request - Email notification

https://www.logviewplus.com/forum/Topic36.aspx

It would be nice if there was a feature that could send you an email upon receipt of a specific event log being posted based on some criteria.  For instance, when DFS fails, an event is posted to the DFS replication log as event ID 2213.  This event indicates an issue that requires manual intervention to resolve.  It would be nice to be able to set an arm an email notification upon this event being spotted in the event logs that are currently being monitored by LogViewPlus.

There would need to be an easy way to disable or re-enable such a feature so that if you are manually reviewing the event logs you don't end up sending yourself email unexpectedly or by accident.  Also to avoid spam there should probably be a limited of some kind to prevent tons of emails from being sent my a client accidentally.

This is definitely something that we are working towards.  Some of the infrastructure to do this is already in place with Event Notifications: https://www.logviewplus.com/docs/event_notifications.html

We can add SMTP or EMS messaging to the existing infrastructure relatively easily.  However, the problem is that LogViewPlus will need to be running on the desktop at all times to monitor the log files.  This is somewhat impractical.  I think for this feature to work properly, LogViewPlus really needs to run in an unattended 'As a Service' mode.  We have a plan to implement this, but it is going to take some time.  With a bit of luck, we should be able to deliver something in this space late next year.  If you think desktop email notifications would be helpful - even if LogViewPlus is only occasionally running - let me know and maybe we can deliver something sooner.

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm used to having programs run on a headless system from a service account.  For that reason, I would find it useful, but I don't know how many other people would.  It would probably be better to have this feature in when LogViewPlus can be run as a service as that way it's possible to have the service start automatically, say if the machine recovers from a power loss situation for instance.

Have you tried the existing popup notifications?  The 'require acknowledgement' flag makes the alerts semi-persistent:
https://www.logviewplus.com/docs/popup_provider.html

As I say, I think we can add SMTP support very quickly and it is something I am happy to look at if there is demand, but I would prefer to wait and do it properly.

Thanks again,

The popup notification dosn't alert me while I'm at home if something happens at work.  I'll look for a work around in my log forwarding setup in the meantime.

Ah!  Now I get it.  :-)

We are late into the current release cycle, but we can look into implementing SMTP notifications in the first release of the new year.  Possibly sooner if the beta testing gets extended.

Thanks!

Please note that SMTP notifications have been added to v2.2.14 which we have just released into BETA.

Documentation for this feature is still pending, but it basically works the same way as popup notifications (you need to configure a notification provider and then choose the provider when setting the notification).  For more information, please see:  https://www.logviewplus.com/docs/notifications.html

Please have a look and let me know if you have any questions or issues.

Thanks,

Toby

I meant to come back with an update sooner.  The email notification works great so far.  I ended up getting caught up with office shuffling and the like.

Glad to hear it - thanks for letting me know.

If you have any other questions / suggestions, please let me know.

One thing I noticed recently.  If the friendly name is diffrent from the SMTP server name, the smtp server name get's over-ridden, which breaks email notifications upon restarting if the friendly name is not the same as the SMTP server name for some reason.  Not sure if this is intended behavior or not.

I have had a look at the code and can see where the issue is.  This is a bug.  I will get a fix in for the next release.

In the meantime, the best work-around would be to leave the Friendly Name field blank.

Thanks for reporting this issue!

Hi Micha,

I have a SendGrid account and I just successfully sent a test email using "smtp.sendgrid.net" on port 25 with TLS enabled.  I will test again and reply to your original issue later today.

Our email provider is Pivotal Elements.  The organization I work for subscribes to enterprise level support, and they have been rather cool with the volume of emails being sent out (update: as in sent to our email account, not sent from our email account).  However, it is important to note that this is probably an exception, rather than the norm.  In particular, the notifications should stay at your corporate email address, and not be sent to a personal one as it may trigger spam filters at other email providers and get your email host blacklisted.
