In addition to building filters on "the side", how about using the query in a simple input area in the menu above the `Log Data View` where you can tinker and try out the logic before saving it?

Most filters have straight-forward execution logic. Complex filters are created by
combining simple steps
, rather than in one attempt. What kind of query are you trying to create?
Have you tried
auto-filters
? This kind of filtering could help you quickly discover what data is in your log file before creating your filter tree:
Hope that helps,
Toby

Yes, but I don't fancy the Excel type of filtering.
I'd prefer a textbox for prototyping my filers that can then be saved as a real filter.

New in v3.0 is the
SQL Filter
type. This has an Execution tab which shows the results of the SQL execution. That might also help.
Aside from SQL, we don't currently have plans to make a filtering language.
Hope that helps,
Toby

Yes, but that rasies the level of complexity instead.
I'm looking for a stream lined way of protoyping my filters AND being able to save them

It is a good idea, but it is not something that we are currently planning. I will add it to our feature suggestions list.
Thanks for the feedback!
