Hello.  I just downloaded your trial.  Looks very cool :-)

Question:  I am aware of the "Number of preceding rows" setting.  I could not find a comparable "Number of following rows" setting.  Is that something I missed, you might add if not there, there is another easy way to achieve, etc.?

Thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback.  Glad to hear you are finding LogViewPlus helpful.  Smile

The "preceding rows" in the Log Entry Display settings determine the number of rows to show above the focused row when navigating between log entries.  If we were to show the focused row at the very top, it would be a little confusing because you would miss out on some of the context (the preceding rows).

Showing the focused row at the bottom would also be a little confusing for the same reason - you miss the context of the records that come next unless you scroll.

The number of rows which are currently in the grid is unknown. Rows can also differ in size. Sometimes, a single log entry can take up the entire grid view.

So the problem with "following" is that it does the same thing as "preceding", but acts in conflict.  If both settings say 10 rows and the grid only has 5 rows, what happens?  What if there are 40 rows?

It is a bit of a confusing feature, but I hope that helps.

Toby

Ah, thanks Toby.  I do (I think) understand what you say.

Maybe though I am not phrasing my question properly, because I am not sure we are talking about the same thing:  Suppose I want to filter a log based on "I'M A MAIN LINE OF IMPORTANCE", but where I want to see, in filtered view, not only every "I'M A MAIN LINE OF IMPORTANCE", but (say) 5 lines before it and 7 after.  So when I scroll, I don't just see the "I'M A MAIN LINE OF IMPORTANCE" lines, but their context too.

I don't *think* that is what you already answered?

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

If you are inside of a filtered view, double-click on any log entry.  This will show you the selected log entry in the main log file including N log entries above the selection.  N is configured with the "preceding rows" in the Log Entry Display settings.

It sounds like the behaviour that your are looking for is that, for each item in the filtered view, you want to show A tiems above and B items below.  But this is not how the filtered views work.  A filtered view filters out non-matching rows.

Hope that helps,

Toby
